Here, I examined IMAX, Dolby Atmos, and Dolby Cinema.

I would also like to introduce the corresponding theaters all over Japan.

What is
IMAX? IMAX is a video standard and its projection system developed by Canadian company IMAX. Its history is surprisingly long. "Tiger Child" screened at was the first work by IMAX method.

Of course, IMAX at that time was a film system, not digital, but there may be people who think that digital is superior to analog.
But don't underestimate analog film.

The super-large 70mm IMAX film had an area ratio about 10 times that of the 35mm film (135 film).
By the way, 35mm film is a common film size used for both photography and movies.

As of 2019, high-end digital cameras include full-size single-lens cameras, which are about the same size as 35mm film. (24×36mm)

Some scenes from Star Wars: The Force Awakens released in December 2015 were shot on IMAX 70mm film.
I explained that the resolution of 70mm film is 10 times higher than that of 35mm film, but in terms of the number of digital pixels, the image quality will be approximately 8K at the time of screening.

However, the 70mm high-definition images cannot be enjoyed at IMAX movie theaters in Japan.

IMAX theaters in various parts of Japan are "IMAX digital", and there are no movie theaters showing regular movies on film.
There are only 20 film IMAX theaters in the world, and none in Japan.
The only way to see the best movies is to go abroad.

Although it is inferior to the 70mm film IMAX, there are theaters in Japan that support the digital version of IMAX.

As of October 30, 2019, there are 32 Atmos theaters nationwide with a total of 36 screens.
Sadly, there are no Atmos-compatible theaters in Hokkaido, Hokuriku, Koshinetsu, and Shikoku regions (including planned openings) .

The first Dolby Cinema compatible theater in Japan was " T Joy Hakata " in Hakata, Fukuoka.

Dolby Cinema fully recommends HDR, but T-Joy Hakata's projector seems to be compatible with 4K as well.
