Covering your teeth "clicks in 20 seconds" A new and amazing adhesive is commercialized, ensuring a small burden on the patient

In June, a new adhesive was released in connection with the bonding of "covers" that are indispensable for dental treatment. Dental material maker " Yamakin " (Osaka city) commercialized using metal oxide nanoparticle structure "MARIMO" developed by Professor Kazuya Kohiro (62) =Structural Nanochemistry of Kochi University of Technology . It is said that the burden on the patient can be reduced and the adhesive can be reliably bonded. Originally, "Uji Denki Kagaku Kogyo" (Kochi Prefecture) focused on its potential as a material, and succeeded in mass production in collaboration with Professor Ohiro. There was a story of industry-academia collaboration in two stages. [Photo] "Marimo" enlarged with an electron microscope ■ Rugged spherical shape, best shape MARIMO is a zirconia (zirconium oxide) used as a refractory material and a reagent for chemical reaction. It consists of 1 million nanoparticles with a diameter of 5 nanometers (1 nanometer is one billionth of a meter). It is spherical. It was born in 2011. “I didn't want to make it round, but while trying various things such as temperature, pressure, and reaction conditions, it happened to be possible with the best combination,” (Prof. Kohiro). The surface is shaped like a bumpy sphere, and it is named MARIMO because it resembles "Marimo", which is famous in Lake Akan (Hokkaido). Initially, I was able to make only 20 to 50 milligrams a day, which was a full earpick, and Professor Kohiro was looking for a joint research destination, saying, "Is there a place where I can make more?" Uji Denki Kagaku Co., Ltd., which paid its attention, made a name for itself. ■For subsidy projects in Kochi Prefecture Collaborative research with Professor Kohiro and the company started on the campus of the university. Tomohiro Okazoe (46) of the company's development department, who is resident at the campus as a visiting researcher at the university, said, “It didn't go well. Looking for possibilities, we changed the conditions such as temperature, pressure and time, And repeated the experiment." A steady method of extending what was good in the experiment and crushing what was bad. The amount that can be made gradually increases, and now it is possible to produce 500 to 600 grams per day. “Once you have one recipe, the reproducibility is high. It is the same as the cooking time,” says Okazoe. The joint research was adopted as a subsidized project in Kochi Prefecture, and research on mass production is still ongoing. ■Set in a short time About this MARIMO, it was Yamakin who offered to use it as a dental adhesive. The company was originally a bullion dealer in Osaka. With the liberalization of gold, we began to produce metal for dental use, and now we are operating as a comprehensive dental material manufacturer, and we are developing a base factory in Kochi prefecture. The company uses computer-aided design/manufacturing support technology (3D printers) to produce a cover of the type called "CAD/CAM crown". As a material for the adhesive used for this, MARIMO makes a white arrow. It was The biggest feature of MARIMO is the large surface area. The surface area of 1 gram is 300 square meters. The larger the surface area, the stronger the adhesive force. The company devised a product that mixes MARIMO with an adhesive. The new product is resin cement "KZR-CAD Marimo Cement LC". According to a person in charge of Yamakin, it is as easy as applying paste to the adhesive and sticking it, and when light is applied, it hardens in a short time, the strength of the adhesion is outstanding, and the burden on the dentist and the patient is reduced. The person in charge said, “Being able to remove a cover is a serious problem for dentists. This cement hardens in 5 seconds when irradiated with light and hardens in 20 seconds. It is easy to remove the protruding part. The burden on the patient is also small." The company plans to sell overseas within this year and aims to reach a shipment value of 150 million yen in four years.
