I'm not sure if it's a good idea or not, but it's a good idea. He doesn't realize why he was rejected.
A nice, cautious guy tends to do this kind of thing. Like when he is a virgin and can't think of a way to ask her out, or when he has been gruff and disliked before and runs to extremes.
