(Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Akira Tanaka, hereinafter referred to as WOWOW), aiming to provide a service that enables easy viewing of high quality sound and high realism content with high-resolution sound sources (*1) and 3D audio (*2), has agreed with NTT Smart Connect, Inc. (Head office: Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture; President: Shuji Akiyama; hereinafter referred to as NTT Smart Connect) to provide services that enable users to enjoy high quality sound and highly realistic content using high-resolution 3D audio (*1) and 3D audio (*2). Also, from December 15 to February 10, the world's first demonstration experiment of high-resolution 3D audio distribution using the omega player and SmartSTREAM will be conducted.
Recently, with the spread of the new coronavirus infection, there are more and more opportunities to enjoy online events via the Internet. In order to meet this need, we have developed a high-resolution audio system.
In order to meet this need, WOWOW, which has been researching the creation of high quality audio services with high sound quality and high realism using high resolution and 3D audio, has developed an omega player with AURO-3D(*3) playback function in collaboration with NTT Smart Connect, and has been working on the development of HPL(*4) & MQA(*5) and Auro-Codec(*6). -On January 11-12, we will conduct the world's first demonstration test of simultaneous live streaming of MQA and AURO-3D, and verify the acceptability of the service.
The omega player's application includes the Auro-Scene function for virtual playback of 3D audio space from two speakers, the Auro-HeadPhones function for 3D audio playback from headphones, and the AURO-3D function for direct playback of AURO-3D signals from a multi-channel audio interface connected to a PC. This is the first time in the world (*8) that these functions are provided as a PC application.
It will be the first time in the world (*8) that such a function is provided as an application for a PC. It will be possible to easily deliver the highest level of high-resolution 3D audio that can be achieved today to smartphones and home PCs with the omega player installed. In the future, we aim to provide a service that enables many customers to easily view high quality and high presence content as a premium service for members and TVOD.
1 High-resolution: A sound source with sound quality as close to the original as possible, with three to six and a half times more information than a CD (generally 44.1 kHz, 16 bits).
2 3D audio: Acoustics that gives the auditory sense of three-dimensional sound direction, distance, and spread, as if you were listening to the original sound in a hall, etc. when playing a sound source.
3 AURO-3D: A 3D audio format developed by Auro Technologies NV of Belgium that includes all the technologies necessary to realize high-resolution 3D audio. It provides the high sound quality technology essential for realizing an ecosystem of content production, distribution, and playback of high-resolution 3D audio.
4 HPL (Head Phone Listening): A technology that optimizes sound sources that are normally designed to be listened to with a set of speakers, etc., for stereo listening with headphones, etc.
5 MQA: A technology that reduces the volume of sound source data and the difference between the original sound and the new sound when digitizing from analog to digital, enabling the reproduction of sound sources with the same high quality as the original sound.
6 AURO-Codec: A 3D audio coding technology that supports high-resolution audio. It achieves near-lossless data volume compression that ensures sound quality as close to the original sound as possible, and high-resolution audio with a sampling frequency of 96 kHz (theoretically unlimited).
7 MPEG-4 ALS lossless compression technology: A technology that makes it possible to restore compressed sound sources to their original digital data at the time of distribution.

Details】During the experiment period, more than a dozen music programs will be delivered to the testers for them to listen to. Testers will be asked to answer a questionnaire during and after the experiment. We will not be able to provide support or add content during the period of 12/25/2021 (Sat) to 1/9/2021 (Sun).
WOWOW will continue to actively collaborate with outstanding external companies and engineers, experimenting with new content-related technologies, and provide high-quality content that includes not only audio but also video, with the aim of providing better services and new entertainment experiences for our customers.
