Dan D'Agostino, 2 models of power amplifiers that have achieved "ultimate evolution"

Stereo power amplifier "MOMENTUM S250MxV"

Axis will release Dan D'Agostino's monaural power amplifier "MOMENTUM M400MxV" and stereo power amplifier "MOMENTUM S250MxV" in February. The price is 13.9 million yen (excluding tax) for the M400MxV pair and 7.9 million yen (excluding tax) for the S250MxV. The exterior colors are silver and black. With the launch of new products, we will also provide an upgrade service for conventional models.

The upgrade service is a large-scale replacement of everything except the chassis, and the supported models and prices are as follows.

  • M300 → M400MxV upgrade 5,800,000 yen (pair / tax not included)
  • M400 → M400 MxV upgrade 3,800,000 yen (pair / tax not included)
  • S200 → S250MxV upgrade 3,100,000 yen (excluding tax)
  • S250 → S250MxV upgrade 2,100,000 yen (excluding tax)

The latest model of the MOMENTUM amplifier series released as the first model of the brand in 2011. The technology and circuit topology gained through the development of the brand's flagship amplifier "Relentless" are strongly projected, and their capabilities are significantly enhanced in all of the power supply, input, driver, and output stages.

"MxV" at the end of the model name is derived from the physical law of Mass x Velocity, which indicates MOMENTUM.

Both models use a new winding pattern for the power transformer. It has the same footprint size as before, but the power output has increased by more than 50%. As a result, it was possible to cope with dynamic and momentary peaks of music signals without fluctuation, and brought a larger headroom to the entire amplifier circuit.

A completely new circuit topology has been introduced at the input stage, and a new device that can supply 10 times more current and power to the bipolar transistor that supplies power to the front end has been introduced. It achieves wider bandwidth and lower distortion characteristics.

The bipolar power transistor installed in the top model Relentless is used for the fully complementary driver stage and the final SEPP power stage. It consists of 32 NPN / PNP pairs, 4 in the driver stage and 12 in the power stage, and achieved a flat wide range of 200kHz by high-speed operation at 69MHz.

The capacitor / resistor network coupled to the base of each transistor uses a special product that maintains high stability for both ultra-high frequency and low-impedance speaker loads, resulting in "overwhelming agility and ultra-wide bandwidth. It gives characteristics to the power stage and brings richer and more dynamic presentations regardless of the genre of music. "

A new bias stabilization circuit, synergistically with MOMENTUM's traditional copper heatsink, increases the operating bias by almost 50% while preventing excessive temperature rise and expanding the class A operating range. It is said to give the sound a higher degree of transparency at all levels.

The chassis consists of a copper heat sink and a machined aluminum block chassis, which can be said to be the tradition of MOMENTUM. Thick copper block heat sinks with a thermal conductivity 1.7 times higher than that of aluminum are placed on the left and right sides of the housing. The vertically pierced heat dissipation hole has a "venturi" structure in which the central part is narrowed down to the upper and lower openings, which accelerates the flow of air through the hole and efficiently releases heat to cool it.

The front is equipped with an elaborate meter that is similar to Breguet's watch design, and features a clever construction that does not expose any screws. The chassis is a machined product made from solid aluminum billed. It has excellent non-resonance, and has shielding performance from RFI (radio frequency interference) and EMI (electromagnetic interference). Both models use the same chassis as the previous model, so all generations of Momentum amplifiers and Momentum stereo amplifiers can be upgraded to Momentum MxV performance levels.

All amplifier circuits are discretely assembled, and carefully selected high-quality components such as transistors, resistors, and capacitors are mounted on a through-hole board. All the resistors used are high-quality metal film units with a 1% error, and the amplifier circuit is DC-coupled in all stages from the input to the output.

Both are handcrafted by a team of technicians and skilled craftsmen at Dan D'Agostino's own factory in Arizona, USA, and are rigorously tested.

The output of M400MxV is 400W @ 8Ω, 800W @ 4Ω, 1,600W @ 2Ω. The signal-to-noise ratio is 105 dB (un-weighted), the gain is 26.5 dB, and the input impedance is 1 MΩ. The input terminal is a balanced XLR x 1, the output terminal is a high-quality binding post, and the output impedance is 0.12Ω. The maximum output is 690W. The external dimensions are 318 x 546 x 133 mm (width x depth x height), and the weight is 43 kg.
