"Japanese military personnel are absolutely evil"
...

All responsibility for the Greater East Asia War lies with Japan, and
prewar Japan is a domineering empire.
It was a dark period dominated by the Army and Navy ...

The planted view of the history of masochism

However, when we reviewed the education of Imperial military personnel at that time, there was a figure that
was
completely different from our image

Masahiro Ishizuka Hello. Thank you for reading the

Renaissance Evening E-mail Magazine

'm Suzuki from the Political Economy Division, who will be in charge of today's e-mail newsletter

Today's content is an article about "Umi no Samurai Do" by
Professor Ryunosuke Megumi of the former Maritime Self-Defense Force

It
is a story between humans of the Royal Navy and the Japanese Navy that occurred on the sea in the middle of the Greater East Asia War
Please know this truth.

◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ In

2003, Sir Samuel Falle , a former Royal Navy
diplomat after the war,
came to Japan.

"I really want to thank you before I die.
 At this age, I have
 never forgotten about him. ”

Sir Fall's purpose in
Japan was to find a Major of the Imperial Japanese Navy.

~ The sinking of the British Navy warship ~ This

is an event during the Greater East Asia War.

The Royal Navy destroyer "Encounter" sank
off the coast of Surabaya in northeastern Java on February 28, 1942. The next day, another Royal Navy cruiser "Exeter" was sunk nearby, and the crew of both ships escaped. He was drifting over the sea, believing that he would join and rescue the Royal Navy However, the rescue of allies did not appear forever A small ship passed by when some sailors gave up returning to their homeland on the sea near the equator without drinking water It was the destroyer "Ikazuchi" of the Imperial Japanese Navy At that time , the British soldiers, who were enemy troops without the obligation to rescue the drifters during the war , were desperate to be strafed. ~ Case rescue the ~ enemy soldiers had served as the captain of the destroyer "thunder" is was a Naval Academy 51 stage graduate students of Shunsaku Kudo Major (then) Captain Kudo is drifting on the sea and to discover the Royal Navy soldiers

Issued a command to "rescue enemy soldiers."

Even though it is a rescue operation
, stopping the ship makes it
a good target for enemy submarines

, and accepting and
treating the injured and sick makes it
impossible to fight.

The crew of "Thunder" may be rebelled even if
the number of Royal Navy soldiers drifting against 220 people
helps more than 400 people

It
was a decision after considering all such risks

All the members, leaving only the first gun,  ready to rescue the enemy drowning !!  All the rest are going to rescue after
leaving the minimum number of people
!!"

Under this command of Captain Kudo, the
Japanese Navy rescued the Royal Navy soldiers. I was.

The Japanese Navy carried out rescue operations using cranes for carrying torpedoes,
ladders that were prohibited from being used even when rescued by friendly forces,
ropes and bamboo poles, and everything that could be used

The Royal Navy soldiers kept order even in this situation, and were rescued in
the order of injured officers, officers, noncommissioned officers, and soldiers
and went up to the ship.

At that time, it was said that "a drop of oil is a drop of blood", and the
chief engineer who controls the fuel made efforts to save money. Since
the fresh water on the ship was refined using fuel, the
crew also saved and used water. Was there.

If the chief engineer continues the rescue operation as it is
Although he said that he would run out of fuel during the battle,
Captain Kudo said, "Rescue all the drifters," and
carried out rescue operations until the end.

At that time, the number of Royal Navy soldiers rescued reached 422.

Sir Fall, then Ensign of the Royal Navy
, is one of them. Two Japanese Navy soldiers took care of

one rescued Royal Navy soldier , washed the body covered
with

heavy oil with fresh water,
and carefully wiped it with a cotton cloth soaked in alcohol,
clothes, food, and drinking. He generously provided water.

Captain Kudo gathered British Navy officers and said,

"You fought bravely. On
 this ship, you are
an honorable guest of the Imperial Japanese Navy,"

and allowed the use of the officer's office. was.

Sir Fall, who was rescued at this time , recalls
the hospitality he received on board the "Thunder" ship
it seemed like he was cruising on a luxury liner
."

He described this event as
"fighting fair even on the battlefield,
praising each other's good fights after the battle, and the
winner was the" practice of Japanese Bushido "to work for the loser
."

~ Reunion ~ By the

time Sir Fall first came to Japan in 2003,
Lieutenant Colonel Kudo (final rank) had already passed away, and where is the
bereaved family?
I didn't even know where the grave was.

However, Mr. Ryunosuke Megumi, who heard the story of this rescue drama , promised Sir Fall that he would  "find out
the whereabouts of Lieutenant Colonel Kudo's grave and the
bereaved family,"
and finally

made full use of his personal connections during the Maritime Self-Defense Force era.
I found the grave of the commander and the bereaved family.

Sir Fall suffers from heart disease and
it seems difficult to make long trip, but
after hearing the news from Mr. Megumi, he strongly hopes to return to Japan.

Then, in December 2008,
Sir Fall
visited the precincts of Yakurinji Temple in Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture, where Lieutenant Colonel Kudo sleeps
, and reunited for the first time in 67 years.

The Imperial Japanese Navy was also called "Silent Navy", and
military personnel had the motto "Don't talk about yourself."

No matter how good you do, if
you talk about it yourself,
it will ruin your success.

Lieutenant Colonel Kudo
and his
family died without telling them about the rescue of enemy soldiers and
it was through the visit of Lord Fall that the bereaved families learned of this fact

Five years later, in 2014,
Sir Fall died at the age of 94.

During his lifetime, Sir Fall posted a post in honor of the rescue of enemy soldiers of "thunder" and Lieutenant Colonel Kudo
in the
US Navy's bulletin and the British Times in the midst of intense international public opinion on Japan
.

Then, in 1996, he
published his autobiography "My Lucky Life", and at

the beginning of the book, it was written that
"Dedicated to Shunsaku Kudo, Major of the Imperial Japanese Navy
."
