Israeli side opposes genocide lawsuit
The lawsuit filed by South Africa claiming that the Israeli military's attack on the Palestinian territory of Gaza constitutes genocide has entered its second day, with the Israeli side appearing in court claiming that the attack was in self-defense.
On April 12, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, the Netherlands, began the second day of hearings in a lawsuit filed by South Africa, claiming that the Israeli military's attack on Gaza violated the Genocide Convention, which prohibits the genocide of ethnic groups.
The legal advisor to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, who appeared in court, stated that "we did not start this war, nor do we want to start it," and that we are fighting against Hamas, not civilians, and claimed justification such as "it is for self-defense.
South Africa, which filed the lawsuit, is requesting that the court take interim measures to order Israel to immediately halt the attacks, and the ICJ chief has indicated that he will make a decision on this matter "as soon as possible.
Several Western media reported that a decision on this provisional measure could be made by the end of this month.
