The "4DX SCREEN" for "Top Gun Maverick" has been a huge success, almost fully booked every day even though it has been in theaters for four weeks. What is the reason why it attracts so many people? The author, who actually experienced it, will tell you the attraction. (Text: Tomomi Ebiya)
This article refers to expressions in the movie "Top Gun Maverick. Please be careful if you have not seen it yet.
First, let me introduce "4DX SCREEN". 4DX SCREEN" is a screening format that combines the 4DX theater and the ScreenX three-screen multi-projection system. The seats tilt back and forth, splashing water, and even smelling and smelling the scent of the water, and the screen in front of you projects images onto the walls on either side. In other words, it is a movie experience that stimulates all five senses.
In fact, I am a big fan of 4D. I have seen "Mad Max: Death Road of Fury" seven times in 4DX. I have seen "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" seven times in 4DX, and I have been to many theaters to compare "MX4D" and "4DX".
However, I have yet to experience "4DX SCREEN". After seeing "Top Gun Maverick" once, I thought, "Oh, this is perfect for my first 4DX SCREEN viewing.
However, it has been a long road from here. There are only four cinemas in Japan that offer "4DX SCREEN": Grand Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro, Cinema Sunshine LaLaport Numazu, 109 Cinemas Granbury Park, and Earth Cinemas Himeji. For now, I decided to go to Grand Cinema Sunshine, which is closest to my house.
I opened the ticket schedule, hoping to be closer to the center or rear of the theater, where I could enjoy the "4DX SCREEN" more. However, there was no time to choose my seat. On Saturdays and Sundays, all seats for the three daily screenings are sold out in less than 20 minutes after the general ticket sales.
I thought, "There should be plenty of time to see the movie during the daytime on a weekday," and checked for tickets for the next day, only to find that only the very front end of the theater was available. The price to see the movie in "4DX SCREEN" was 1,500 yen, which was quite expensive in addition to the regular ticket price, and yet, this was the first time I saw the movie. What is it that attracts people like this? With my expectations raised even higher, I managed to secure a seat for the weekday noon time slot just in time for the ticket sales.
On the day of the movie, I visited Grand Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro with great enthusiasm. When I think of going to the movies, I think of popcorn. I always buy a popcorn set before going to the movies. At United Cinemas Toyosu, which I often visit, the popcorn cups are placed in a bag for the "4DX" show. I had assumed that this would be the case this time as well, but at the Grand Cinema Sunshine, it did not appear to be the case. I took the cup full of popcorn straight to my seat. It was time for the show to begin. While trailers for attractive new movies were playing, we had to reduce the amount of popcorn to a level where we could withstand a little shaking in preparation for the start of "4DX," which was like a demonstration before the main feature. I just ate it in earnest.
Finally, the seats began to move with what sounded like a low motor, and water spurted out as the seats shook with a demonstration video of "4DX," in collaboration with "Jurassic World: The New Reign," which will be released on July 29. At this point, the excitement in the hall changes. People's exclamations of admiration leak out as the seats move. In fact, I always grin at this moment. The surprise of the people who had probably experienced "4D" for the first time made me think, "You are finally on our side (those who have experienced it), aren't you? By the way, my popcorn did not spill.
The demonstration of "ScreenX" started. I wondered if the addition of the left and right images to the flat world of the movie would add to the immersive experience. Expectations were high. When I experienced "ScreenX" with "Black Panther" in the past, I felt as if I was on an airplane. Once again, the demonstration of ScreenX has heightened my feelings.
The long-awaited film begins. The opening, which unfolds to the theme song "Danger Zone" and is reminiscent of the previous film "Top Gun," is projected on three screens. The opening was exciting even on the first viewing, but just seeing it unfold on three screens brought fresh surprise, emotion, and excitement to my heart. As the "Danger Zone" builds, the seating surfaces send vibrations echoing through your body. From the very beginning, one's mood soars.
Amidst the great excitement, the fighter plane piloted by Maverick takes off into the sky, aiming for Mach 10. From the cockpit, the view is of an endless, beautiful sky. Maverick is forever captivated by the sky. It is a view that one can't help but agree with this sentiment. This is also a feeling that could not be known on the regular screen. The fighter gradually increases its speed. The seat moves with it. Now I am flying with Maverick. It was an experience that compelled me to think so.
Not all scenes in "ScreenX" are on all three sides. In drama scenes, only the front view is used, but this allows the viewer to focus on the characters. This makes the viewer concentrate more on the characters and their facial expressions.
On the other hand, almost all of the scenes in the air are developed in three planes. The audience's consciousness is thrown into the sky. The seats move with the movement of the fighter plane, and the view from the cockpit spreads out before your eyes.
The climax of the story comes when the audience is challenged with a "nearly impossible mission. To avoid detection by the enemy's anti-aircraft missiles, the plane soars and then descends steeply on its back. The plane makes a full turn. My brain was under the illusion that I, too, had made a full turn. And four planes spinning. I thought I was going to lose my mind. But at the same time, my excitement peaked and Maverick's line, "Don't think! rings in my head. Yes, don't think, just immerse yourself in this world.
The movie closed with a lasting sense of elation. The "4DX SCREEN" experience was fleeting, but it was a pleasantly exhausting one. I left the theater with a fresh feeling, not believing that I was seeing the movie for the second time.
I definitely "experienced" the movie, not "saw" it. I had been starving for stimulation, unable to travel far from home, but I had no idea that there was a place in such close proximity that could show me another world. ...... Feeling refreshed, I contacted my friend. I called my friend and we agreed to go to the "4DX SCREEN" and be "thrown into the sky" together.
