Japan Post announced on April 14 that it would start a demonstration experiment of a "post office of the future" incorporating a self-checkout system at the Otemachi Post Office in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward on April 15. The self-checkout system allows customers to weigh letters and other items themselves and pay for them with credit cards or electronic money instead of cash. A lounge where customers can relax while waiting is also set up, combining the advantages of digital and brick-and-mortar stores.

The lounge displays original post office goods and local specialties, which can also be purchased as gifts. A "digital ticketing machine" that allows customers to check congestion status online has also been installed, as well as a booth where customers can receive online consultations on financial products.
