A job would be offered with an application requirement of having "more than 12 years" experience in a system that has been in existence for 6 years.

In the job search process, "years of experience" in a certain job or skill is an important item, and in fact many jobs have years of experience as a requirement. The Register reports that there are a few cases where such years of experience is required to be more than "the number of years since the job or skill was created".

IBM job ad calls for 12 years' experience with Kubernetes - which is six years old - The Register

IBM's job advertisement on June 27, 2020 for a Cloud Engineer in India states that the requirement is "12 years' experience with Kubernetes administration and operations. Since Kubernetes was released in 2014, having 12 years of experience in Kubernetes administration and operations is not possible in 2020.

These mistakes are not limited to IBM, he said, but there are others. Sebastián Ramírez, creator of the web framework FastAPI, tweeted, "I had a job offer that required 4+ years of FastAPI experience, but I couldn't apply because we have only released FastAPI a year and a half ago."

In response to these erroneous background requirements, some tweeted to the effect that "it is possible if you work overtime.

It seems that the discrepancies in backgrounds are not only on the job seeker's side, but also on the candidate's side. Lynn Boyden, an adjunct instructor at the University of California, Los Angeles, interviewed a 28-year-old designer in 2012 who claimed to have "17 years of web design experience. If the designer's story is true, he has been designing websites since 1995, and although the World Wide Web (WWW) was invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989, Boyden said, "Even Tim Berners-Lee does not have 17 years of web design experience. to which the designer replied, "Who are you? to which the designer replied, "Who is it?

We interviewed a 28yo designer in 2012 who told us he had 17 years experience designing websites. I said, "Tim Berners-Lee doesn't have 17 years experience designing websites."

"Who's Tim Berners-Lee?" he asked.

So yeah. ????

Ramírez commented that it may be time to rethink the idea that years of experience = skill level.
